Zelle® Safety Guidelines & Best Practices
Pay It Safe with Zelle®
Zelle® is a fast, convenient, and secure way to send money—but it’s important to use it wisely. Follow these best practices to help keep your transactions safe.
1. Only Send Money to Those You Trust
Zelle® is designed for payments between friends, family, and people you trust. Why? Because once a payment is sent, it cannot be canceled if the recipient is already enrolled. If you send money to someone you don’t know or don’t receive what you expected, you may not get your money back.
2. Treat Zelle® Like Cash
Think of Zelle® as digital cash—once you send a payment, it moves directly into the recipient’s bank account within minutes.2 Just like handing someone cash, you can’t cancel a payment if the recipient is already enrolled.
3. Beware of Payment Scams
If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be cautious when using Zelle® to pay for items sold online, such as concert tickets or marketplace purchases—especially if the seller insists on using Zelle®. Zelle® does not offer purchase protection, so only send money to people you personally know and trust.
4. Confirm Your Recipient’s Contact Information
Before sending money, double-check that you have the correct US mobile number or email address for your recipient. If you send money to the wrong person, you may not be able to get it back. When in doubt, contact your recipient to verify their details.
5. Understand Your Payment Options
If you’re purchasing from someone you don’t know or are unsure about receiving what you paid for, consider using a credit card instead. Many credit cards offer built-in buyer protections that Zelle® does not provide. Unlike credit cards, Zelle® does not cover cases where an item isn’t received or isn’t as expected.
Stay Secure with These Additional Tips
